Our Story

Why We Provide Comprehensive Care for Seniors

PRAIRIE COUNCIL ON AGING

PRAIRIE COUNCIL ON AGING was formed when the federal government told all the states that it was mandatory to have a Department on Aging when the OLDER AMERICANS ACT was passed over 46 years ago.

The federal government sends monetary resources to each state and they in turn add 1/3 more and partner with Area Agencies on Aging, such as AgeLinc in Springfield as well as directly with providers like PRAIRIE COUNCIL ON AGING.

PRAIRIE COUNCIL ON AGING has 2 offices in Jacksonville and Carrollton and serves the following counties: Morgan, Cass, Scott, Greene, and Jersey.

This means, by calling PRAIRIE COUNCIL ON AGING, each person receives an individualized, comprehensive care plan with the local, regional, state and federal resources behind them. Of course, there is always a greater need than resources will allow to have filled. For example, currently, the Bread of Love Nutrition Program is able to service shut-in seniors, a hot ready to eat meal only, 4 days a week. No senior is turned away, so balancing the social service need with the financial obligations has proven difficult. We have seniors who, applaud the help, the Community Care Program gives in-home care aids, emergency home response buttons, and automated medicine dispensers.

Prairie Council On Aging

PRAIRIE COUNCIL ON AGING also services people with disabilities in the Adult Protective Service Program, investigating a wide array of abuse from financial exploitation to physical and emotional abuse. Of course we are also the one-stop shop for everything from reduced license plate applications to Medicare Part D online enrollment. This year, we have adapted and are offering some education with the Aging Mastery program on ZOOM. Lastly, we try and care for people who are the frontline caregivers, as we all start with good intentions that quickly turn into exhaustion.

PRAIRIE COUNCIL ON AGING is the Caregiver Resource Center for Morgan, Cass, and Scott Counties.

The work is meaningful and necessary. Please help the mission of keeping seniors SAFELY in the Community as long as possible. It saves the senior from leaving their homes and the taxpayer from having Medicaid pay for a nursing home 24/7 skilled care, instead of a PRAIRIE COUNCIL ON AGING keeping seniors in their homes for a 1/3 of the cost. You can press the donate button and give what you can. We appreciate your generosity.
